Not everyone believes that media should be an integral part of the school system. Research has been ongoing in an effort to learn whether media and technology facilitate learning or not.

2.    Differentiate the following concepts in relation to EMT, where possible give an example in each case:

      i.         Multimedia presentation from multi image presentation
A multimedia presentation would be a presentation file which is not limited to just text in terms of content. For example, It would have interactive video, sound, links, images, animated gifs and transitions in it. Here are a few popular program used to make a presentation: Microsoft PowerPoint, keynote and Prezi.
Multi-image presentaton is two or more pictures that are projected or presented simultaneously on one or more screen(s) for group viewing or teaching a single lesson e.g the projection of images using the sound film projector and slide film projector or an OHP and the opaque projector. Most images/pictures are projected from slides or OHP film series.

ii.              Informational media from instructional media
Information Media presents information, facts, and explanations of topics that are of interest to the public. Examples are magazines, newspapers, billboards, radio, TV, web pages, bulletins, advertisements, pamphlets, telephones, letters, signposts, and tents.
Instructional Media is the term learning media refers to all tools used by lecturers and students. In other cases, this only refers to print media.

iii.              Traditional media from modern media
Traditional Media is ancient and locally produced media used by our grand parents in communication. e,g drums, songs, pictures signs, models, radios, writing boards, books, work cards, maps, globes and atlases. Refers to the simple, cheap and easy media to operate. E.g. books, handouts, fliers, objects and specimen.
Modern Media is local or imported media that appear to be new in the society in their development and use less than 25yrs in schools in Tanzania (Henry 1985). Examples include; electronic equipments such as computers, television, digital radios, video tapes, receivers, flexible OHPs, websites, internets, digital cameras, etc. Any effective communication today combines pictorial images (visual image) and language same way it did in the past but in a more sophisticated technological way.

iv.     Technology in education from technology of education
Technology in education refers to how technology is applied or used in facilitating teaching and processes such as operating computers connected to the internet to find educational materials, using social networks such as blogs, Facebook, Twitter, and e-mail in educational matters.
Technology of education used for communication and information dissemination. The concept refers to the availability of materials (gadgets) or audio-visual equipment in schools e.g. audio cassettes, models, radio etc. Such gadgets are increasingly integrated into the classroom teaching-learning process.

3. What is education media and how does it involve educational technology?
Rowtree (1990) says education media is the development (process involving learners from start to evaluation) and evaluation (how much has the learners achieved given the applied media and technology) of system of techniques (technology) and aids (media) so as to improve the teaching – learning in conveying the content (message) to learners.

4. Describe how some scholars become convinced of the decision of using the concept of educational media and technology.
Educational technology which is the parent of Percival and Ellington learning media in the book Educational Technology, translated by Sudjarwo (1988: 9-10), writes a definition of educational technology, namely: Educational technology is the development, application and evaluation of systems, techniques and tools with the aim of improving the learning process for humans (Council for Education for Technology for the United Kingdom). Educational technology applies empirical testing techniques to improve learning situations (Nation Center for Programmed Learning United Kingdom). Educational technology is a systematic way in the design, implementation and evaluation of the teaching / learning process as a whole to achieve specific instructional goals. learning media are anything, objects, or even the school environment that build conditions that can make students improve the processes, situations, and effectiveness of teaching and learning.

5. Discuss the five principle functions of educational technology so as to improve the overall efficiency of teaching-learning process in classrooms
      1)   The use of media technology in the teaching and learning process is not an additional function, but has its own function as a tool to realize an effective teaching and learning situation.
      2)   The use of instructional technology media is an integral part of the whole teaching situation. This means it is one of the elements that must be developed by the teacher.
3 )  The use of media in teaching is not merely a means of entertainment, in the sense of being used merely to complete the learning process so that it attracts the attention of students more.
      4)  Accelerate the process of teaching and learning and assist students in capturing / understanding the understanding given by the teacher.
    5) Enhance the quality of teaching and learning. In other words, by using the media, learning outcomes achieved by students will be long lasting and remembered by students.
